Challenge

Nordform had built a serious analytics engine. The data was rich, the calculations were sound, and the people who learned the product swore by it. The problem was everyone else. The interface had grown feature by feature until every screen was a wall of controls, tables and toggles competing for attention. New users bounced off it. Existing users built private workarounds. The product's real value was buried under its own density, and the team knew that every new feature was making the wall taller.

The brief was not to add. It was to make the existing power legible — to design an interface system that could carry an enormous amount of information without making a person feel like they were reading a spreadsheet through a keyhole.

Approach

We started by mapping the decisions the product actually had to support, not the features it happened to have. That distinction reshaped everything. Most screens were trying to expose every capability at once; what users needed was a clear default view that answered the common question, with depth available the moment they reached for it. We designed a layered information hierarchy — a calm surface, progressive disclosure underneath — so the suite could stay powerful without being loud.

On top of that we built a proper interface system: a disciplined type scale tuned for data density, a restrained palette where colour carried meaning rather than decoration, and a small, rigorous set of components for tables, charts and filters. Crucially, we handed it over as a system the Nordform team could extend. The point was not to design every screen forever, but to give them a set of resolved decisions so the next hundred screens would be legible by default.

The data was never the problem. The problem was asking a person to hold all of it at once. Good product design decides what they can safely ignore.

Outcome

After rollout, median time-to-insight — the time it took a user to get from opening the product to an answer they could act on — fell by forty-one per cent. Support tickets about "where do I find…" dropped sharply, and onboarding for new accounts no longer required a live walkthrough to be survivable. The interface system has since carried several major feature releases without the screens drifting back toward clutter, because the rules that keep them clear are now built into how the team designs.

Nordform kept all of its analytical depth and lost the thing that was holding it back: the feeling that you needed to be an expert just to read the screen.

The deeper win was cultural. Because the interface system encoded a shared idea of what "clear" meant, the conversations inside the product team changed. Arguments that used to be about taste — should this go here, should that be bigger — became questions the system already answered. That is the quiet payoff of good product design: it does not just fix the screens in front of you, it gives a team a faster, calmer way to make the next thousand decisions.
